Dr. Katherine Fan
The bay area has been my home since 1990 when I moved from Taiwan. I attended Winton Middle School in Hayward and Monta Vista High School in Cupertino. After my Bachelor of Science degree from U.C. Berkeley with a major in Bioengineering and a minor in Chemical Engineering, I attended medical school at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, Alabama. Although I originally intended to study pediatrics, I also found myself attracted to psychiatry and child psychiatry. Instead of having to choose, I was accepted into the Triple Board Program at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one of only a handful in the nation. The Triple Board Program, a combined training program in Pediatrics, Adult Psychiatry, and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, provided me with a unique perspective to care for children and their families.
Prior to moving back to the bay area in 2008, I worked as a psychiatrist at Pittsburgh Pastoral Institute. Since 2008, I have been working in a clinic in Union City providing psychiatric evaluation and management for high-risk youths and their families. I joined Bay Area Children’s Association in September 2009 because I share Tom’s vision and the agency’s mission in providing quality, evidence-based mental health care for children, adolescents, adults, and families. With insight into the challenges facing many immigrant families, I also hope to contribute to the community with my fluency in Mandarin Chinese and Taiwanese.
I’m currently working on expanding my private practice and training my Maltese puppy to become a therapy dog.
